FAQ’s

My floors are buckled and warped, what is causing this?

There may be several reasons why this is happening. If your hardwood floors are solid in design, it is possible that excess moisture is being accumulated in your crawl space as this is the first place to look for trouble under this condition. There are other reasons for this trouble as well. Consider possible pipe leaks or refrigeration ice maker hoses that could have slow consistent leaks.

I’ve always heard you shouldn’t use hardwood flooring in kitchen’s and bath rooms.

When you consider that wood flooring has been around for centuries there’s no reason to assume it won’t hold up in your home and in any room. Today’s finishes add to this endurance as well. The Urethane finishes today can hold up again heavy foot traffic, water spills, resist wear and unlike finishes of old are virtually maintenance free. This mean no stripping, buffing, or waxing to ensure it’s beauty and shine.

There are so many types of floors, how do I know what’s right for me?

This is a very good question and one that we answer at least 4 or 5 times a month from first time wood buyers. Selecting your wood species involves so much more than its simple beauty sometimes. You need to know the woods inherent characteristics like grain patterns, consistent  color, stability, sanding ability, how is reacts to stains, or finishes, availability of the wood and cost of course. There is information on any species available to help you make a great selection. Let us know your desires.

Is it cost-effective for home builders and renovators to select wood floors over less costly materials?

According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) the answer is Yes! Residential real estate agents say homes with wood floors hold their value better, sell faster, and gain higher prices per listing, according to a nationwide survey commissioned the NWFA. By a 3 to 1 margin, real estate agents said that a house with wood floors sells faster than a house with carpet. And 58 percent said house’s with wood floors sold for higher premiums. It’s nice to see this conveyed by survey, but I always knew this was the case. :-)

My floors squeak and feel spongy in some areas.

Loose or noisy squeaky floors can be more than just annoying, they could be heading south and without attention will eventually get there. In most cases remedies are easy and longevity of your floors will be restored. Here are some of the basic causes: Improper nailing method of your floors; weak sub-floor system of joist problems; non plywood sub-floor where particle board was used instead; excess moisture or excess drying. Possible solutions are: Nail face boards in problem areas and fill with putty; go under house and strengthen sub-floor; inject adhesive; wedge sub-floor and joist. Call your hardwood flooring contractor for professional assessment.

We removed the carpet from our home and discovered hardwood floors, but pet stains a plenty.

This is very common and most unfortunate for the floors. Pet stains can cause extreme damage to your floors by discoloration of the wood pigment resulting in dark appearance that may not be able to sand out. However, there are situations when the stains are sanded out completely, you will be at the mercy of the pets general health and diet, as well, as length of time the stain manifested. Even shampooing areas of the carpet to remove urine can undoubtedly cause damage to the floors by over saturation of water. If you have pets, train them accordingly and try not to leave pets indoors without a way out to the yard if you fill their water bowl. Believe it or not, a pet can survive while you’re working without water.

There are many FAQ’s of course that aren’t listed here. So feel free to chime right in with your questions. I’ll never be able to answer them for you, if you don’t ask them. :-)
